Introducing......Our Kindergartner....Kalei!!!!!!

Today Kalei started Kindergarten. How can it be? I mean wasn't it just yesterday that she was born and I just getting to know her? Now I know my Kalei girl like my favorite book, but I am still baffled. Could almost 5 years really have gone by that quickly?

When I got home this morning from my run both girls were in bed with Shawn. I told Kalei it was time to get up and "get it on" (a Pipo catch phase we have adopted here at the South House). She told me Daddy was going to wake her up, so they could have the same breakfast... bran flakes! That is Kalei, she loves everything her daddy loves.

She got dressed and chattered all morning about how excited she was. She was making plans for after school. That is Kalei, she is always busy with plans and future play.

When we got to school she got in line and waited for her teacher, Ms Douglas, to take them into the classroom. She was so brave. As she heard other children crying, she looked at us for reassurance and a smile. That is Kalei, always so brave...especially if we are.

There was one time I thought she was going to run back into my arms. When Ms Douglas said it was time to say good morning to her and good bye to mommy and daddy. She turned and looked at us like ...really? this is it...? Shawn and I both reassured her with a smile and a wave... then she turned and followed the other children in. That is Kalei, always making us burst with pride.

Ms Douglas and all of her future teachers are soooooo lucky to have her as a student. Kalei made sure Ms Douglas got a bunch of hand picked flowers from our garden this morning. She loves her teachers. She respects them and listens to them. That is Kalei, so thoughtful and kind.

In Kalei words as she was running to catch up to her sister and daddy today "I love kindergarten!" I have to thank Ms Douglas for that. Day one and you hit it out of the park.. thank you for making her day special.

After school we took Kalei to Chick for lunch and then we welcomed her home with a little "back to school" party... just us... but a party none the less. One again, I was brought to tears when she said "thank you mommy, today was so GREAT! I just love being a Kindergartner!" That is Kalei, melting my heart!

Kalei Elizabeth South you are a Kindergartner today! We love you!

In case you are wondering...I did better than predicted... I almost lost it my first day teaching when the kids and parents said good bye. So you can imagine the emotions I was feeling when it is our daughter. I am so thankful that Shawn was able to take the day off. A most of you know... he is my rock. I got a lecture from Michelle, my teacher friend, she told me what I need to do to make it okay for Kalei to be so brave and go into school knowing it is a good and safe place for her. Thank you for that Michelle... I did my best.

On a side note...Alice Mae said "I want to go in too"... precious baby I told her..not yet... we aren't ready for that yet :)

I can't believe she's going to kindergarten already! What a fun age though, my favorite to teach. Is it year round school?

Awww...so sweet. Even though she is actually younger than Payton, he won't go to Kindergarten until NEXT year. And I know that I will cry....
