Adventures in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park

A couple of weekends ago we headed out to Rocky Mountain National Park and had a great time hiking and esploring the area. Right outside the park the town of Estes Park. It is a quaint and cozy little town with a beautiful river that runs right through it.

We talked to the forest rangers about the best place to go in RMNP for the kids and thought we had it all squared away. Unforunately we missed a turn and headed straight to the top of the mountain. It was a slow trip up but it was amazing.

Once we explored the Tundra we headed back down to Bear Lake... our original destination. We went hiking to Alberta Falls. Kalei is quite the hiker. She hiked 2 miles with very little complaining. Alice on the other hand needed a lot of help. So Shawn made me a make shift sling and we were set. Trying to be a good example for the girls, I didn't complain either... but I will say now... Alice got heavy after a while. We are currently stalking craigslist for a Ergo Carrier! Alerta Falls was so powerful and beautiful. We could feel the mist from the falls... refreshing!

The little creek was fun for the girls to cross too. Can you guess who crossed it about 100 times!

Alice looked like she was going to be adventurous and follow Kalei, but she only made it to the first little rock... then she would turn around and go back to the path. She did that about 100 times. Shawn tried lure her into crossing, but I had to hold her hand and guide her to the other side.

We headed to Bear Lake after the trip to Alberta Falls, but we were chased awasy by mosquitos. So much foir no bugs in Colorado.

We had such a great day. We are already planning our next trip! We might try campimg up there... stay tuned!

hello - this is Lindsey Carlson's mom in Colo. Springs. Have to tell you ... if you want to see wildlife in RMNP, go to the far west side of the park. Over the pass and down the other side of the mt range. Probably about 30 minutes more from the highest point - which it looks like you were at.

Our favorite place is Grand Lake, CO. It's right outside of the west side of the park. Grand Lake is even more remote and quaint than Estes Park. No commercial restaurants or hotels. All local. Great lake there. Great hiking trail (less than a mile) to another beautiful water fall.

We stay there - and go into the park esp. at dusk to see hundreds of elk - and usually a moose or two, if you are lucky. Last month, spent an hour watching a mother moose and her frolic-ing baby moose! They are in the "Never Summer" Valley on the west side of the park. Your girls would probably enjoy a short hike back into the Never Summer ranch .... an old homesite from probably 100 years ago. Historical. If you go in late Sept. / early Oct. you can hear the elk "bugeling" at dusk. An awesome sound.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the "wonders" of the state. Welcome to Colorado!
